Lens on Fez: Photography Expedition

★ 4.9 Half day · ≈ 5 h Fez Private · riad pickup

About this experience

Fez is one of the most photogenic cities on earth and one of the hardest to photograph well: the lanes are narrow, the contrast is brutal, and pointing a lens at a stranger goes wrong quickly if you do not know how to ask. This route is built around both problems — the light and the people.

Your guide is a working photographer from Fez who times the route to the sun: shafts through the cedar roofing of Talaa Kebira in the first hour, the tannery terraces while the vats are still in shadow, the dyers’ lane when the hanging skeins are backlit, rooftops at the end for the hour before sunset. Along the way he handles the introductions, so the brass worker, the weaver and the bread baker are photographed with their consent and often their cooperation.

Technique is part of it: metering for high contrast, shooting at 1/60 in a dark workshop without flash, composing in a lane two metres wide. Bring a camera or a phone — the advice is adapted either way — and expect to come back with a set rather than a stack of snapshots.

Good to know

Do I need a professional camera?

No. Roughly half our guests shoot on a phone, and the coaching adapts. If you do bring a camera, a 24–70 equivalent plus something fast for interiors covers the whole route.

What skill level is this for?

Anywhere from confident beginner to professional. Tell us where you are when booking and the guide pitches the technical side accordingly — exposure basics at one end, lighting and sequencing at the other.

Is it really acceptable to photograph people here?

With permission, yes, and getting that permission is the point of going with a local. Your guide knows the artisans, asks first, and will tell you clearly where not to shoot — inside mosques and at the Zaouia, and around women who have not agreed.

Can we shoot at sunrise or sunset instead?

Yes. The 08:00 start is the default, but a sunrise version from 06:30 and an afternoon-to-golden-hour version are both available at the same price. Sunrise is the quietest Medina you will ever photograph.

Can you include a model or a styled portrait session?

Yes, on request, with a local model and a rooftop or riad setting. There is an additional fee for the model's time — ask for a quote.

Is a tripod worth bringing?

A small one for the rooftops, yes. In the lanes it mostly gets in the way, and the workshops are tight enough that handheld at a slow shutter is the practical answer.

How does pickup work?

Your guide meets you at the door of your riad or hotel in Fez at 08:00 and walks you back at the end. If your riad sits deep in the Medina, we agree the nearest gate the day before so nobody waits in the wrong alley.

Is the price per person or per group?

€60 is per person, and it is the full price — guiding, entrance fees and transport inside the city are already included. Groups are capped at four photographers so that everyone gets the frame.

How do we book and pay?

Send your date and group size by WhatsApp. You get a written confirmation the same day, usually within a couple of hours. No deposit and no card details: you pay your guide in cash, in euros or dirhams, on the day.

What if we need to cancel?

Cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the start time — a message is enough. Inside 48 hours we will still move you to another date whenever we can.
