Fez Revealed: A Cultural Journey
About this experience
Fez el Bali has around nine thousand lanes and no logical plan, which is exactly why it rewards a guide. This full day follows the city’s own order rather than a checklist: the Bou Inania madrasa and its water clock, the Al-Quaraouiyine complex — the oldest continuously operating university on earth — the mosaic of the Nejjarine fountain, the Chouara tanneries from a terrace above the vats, and the Andalusian quarter across the river where the crowds thin out.
Your guide is licensed, Fez-born and paid by us rather than by commission, so the day is a conversation about Merinid architecture, Sufi brotherhoods, guild politics and what the Medina is like to live in today — not a circuit of shops. Where a workshop is worth seeing, you see it; nobody follows you with a sales pitch.
We break for lunch where you want: a rooftop with a view, a grill the students use, or a palace restaurant if the occasion calls for it. Afterwards we climb to the Merinid tombs for the view that makes sense of everything you walked through.

Good to know
Can we go inside Al-Quaraouiyine or the mosques?
Non-Muslim visitors cannot enter the prayer halls, which is Moroccan law rather than our rule. You do go into the madrasas, the library courtyard and the Zaouia's doorway, and your guide positions you where the architecture is actually visible.
How much walking is there, and is it hard going?
Six to eight kilometres over the day, on cobbles, with some slopes and steps. We pace it with breaks and can bring the car to several gates; tell us about knees, hips or a stroller and the route is adjusted.
Will we be taken to shops?
Only if you ask. Your guide earns nothing from a sale, so the tanneries, a weaver or a brass workshop are shown as craft, and you can walk out empty-handed with no awkwardness.
Is it too much for children?
Children from about seven manage it well — the tanneries, the water clock and the donkeys do the work. For younger ones we suggest the shorter Souks & Streets tour instead.
What should I wear?
Covered shoulders and knees for the religious sites, and shoes you can walk on uneven stone in all day. A scarf is useful for the tanneries.
Which languages are available?
English, French, Spanish and Arabic as standard; Italian and German with a few days' notice.
How does pickup work?
Your guide meets you at the door of your riad or hotel in Fez at 09:00 and walks you back at the end. If your riad sits deep in the Medina, we agree the nearest gate the day before so nobody waits in the wrong alley.
Is the price per person or per group?
€45 is per person, and it is the full price — guiding, entrance fees and transport inside the city are already included. Entrance fees to the madrasas and the Mellah sites are already in it, so there is nothing to pay at the gate.
How do we book and pay?
Send your date and group size by WhatsApp. You get a written confirmation the same day, usually within a couple of hours. No deposit and no card details: you pay your guide in cash, in euros or dirhams, on the day.
What if we need to cancel?
Cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the start time — a message is enough. Inside 48 hours we will still move you to another date whenever we can.
