Desert Dawn: 2-Day Merzouga Adventure

★ 4.9 2 days · 1 night Merzouga Private · riad pickup Signature

About this experience

Two days is the shortest trip to Merzouga that still deserves the name. You cross the Middle Atlas through Ifrane’s cedar forest and over the Tizi n’Talghemt pass, drop into the Ziz Valley where the palms run for forty kilometres between red cliffs, and reach the edge of Erg Chebbi in time to ride into the dunes as the light goes.

The night is the point. Camels take you an hour into the sand to a traditional Berber camp — private tents, real beds, dinner cooked by the family who runs it, drums round the fire and a sky with nothing between you and it. You are woken for sunrise over the dunes, which is the single best hour of the whole trip, before the ride back out and the long drive home through the Atlas.

It is a lot of road for two days — roughly nine hours each way — and we say so plainly. If you have a third day, take it; the three-day version adds the oases, the nomad camps and the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia without adding any driving.

Good to know

Is two days enough, or should we do three?

Two days gets you the dunes, the camp and both camel treks, and thousands of travellers do exactly that. But the driving is nine hours each way, so day two is mostly road. If you can spare a third day, the 3-day trip adds Khamlia's Gnawa musicians, the oases and the nomad camps without adding a single hour of driving — it is the better trip.

Do we have to ride a camel?

No. The camp is reachable by 4x4 and we arrange that at no extra cost — tell us when you book. Some guests ride in and drive out, which works well.

What are the tents actually like?

Traditional camel-hair tents, private per couple or family, with real beds, mattresses, sheets and heavy blankets. Bathrooms are shared, with running water and hot showers. A luxury camp with en-suite tents and electricity is available for a supplement if you prefer.

How cold does the desert get at night?

From November to March it drops close to freezing after dark, and the camp provides thick blankets and a fire. April–May and September–October are the ideal nights. In July and August the days are 45 °C and we strongly suggest another month, or the 3-day version with the hot hours spent resting.

Is it suitable for children or for older travellers?

Yes to both, with the 4x4 option instead of the camels and a planned break on the long drive. The youngest guests we have taken were three and the oldest in their late seventies. Children under 12 get a reduced rate — ask us.

Is there a toilet, a shower and a phone signal?

Shared toilets and hot showers at the camp. Moroccan mobile signal reaches most of the erg and is usually enough for WhatsApp; Wi-Fi is at the edge-of-desert hotel, not in the dunes.

Can we end the trip in Marrakech instead of Fez?

Yes, via the Dades and Todra gorges, as a one-way itinerary. It needs a third day to be enjoyable rather than brutal — ask us for the quote.

What time do we leave Fez and when are we back?

We collect you at your riad between 07:00 and 07:30 and return you to the same address on the final evening, typically between 19:00 and 20:00. You spend one night in the desert camp, not in a hotel on the edge of town.

Is the price per person?

Yes — €150 per person, covering the private vehicle and driver-guide, the camel trek, the 4x4 excursion, your nights in the camp and all dinners and breakfasts. Only lunches on the road are extra.

How do we book and pay?

Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp. Once we confirm the camp, a small transfer secures the tents; the balance is paid in cash on the morning you leave Fez.

Can we finish in Marrakech instead of Fez?

Yes. The return can run through the Dades and Todra gorges to Marrakech, or to Ouarzazate for a flight. Tell us in the first message and we will quote the one-way version.

What should we pack?

A small overnight bag with layers — warm days, genuinely cold nights from November to March — plus a scarf for the dunes, sunscreen, sunglasses and closed shoes. Your main luggage stays locked in the vehicle or at your riad in Fez.
