Royal Capitals: Fez to Rabat & the Atlantic
About this experience
Rabat is the quietest of Morocco’s four imperial cities and, for many visitors, the most pleasant: wide boulevards, an uncrowded medina, and the Atlantic at the end of every street. It is also where the country’s history stacks up most neatly — a Roman port at Chellah, a Merinid necropolis built over it, the unfinished Almohad mosque whose Hassan Tower still stands, and the modern mausoleum of Mohammed V beside it.
The day’s best hour is usually the Kasbah des Oudayas: a blue-and-white Andalusian quarter on the cliff above the river mouth, with its gardens, its café terrace over the water, and Salé on the far bank. We add the Chellah necropolis, where storks nest on the minaret above the Roman forum, and time in the Medina and the Habous souks.
It is roughly two and a half hours each way on good motorway, so this is a full eleven-hour day. If you are heading on to Casablanca or the airport afterwards, we can run it one-way with your luggage — often the best use of a travel day.

Good to know
Is eleven hours too long for one day?
It is our longest road day after the Sahara, with five hours of driving on good motorway. Most guests find it comfortable because the car is private and the stops are generous. If you would rather not do it in a day, we run it one-way with luggage, or as an overnight.
Can we finish in Casablanca or at the airport?
Yes, and it is the smartest version of this trip if you are moving on. Mohammed V airport is an hour past Rabat; we take your luggage, add a Hassan II Mosque stop in Casablanca if time allows, and quote the one-way rate — ask us.
Can we visit the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca instead?
Only on the one-way version, or as its own day trip. It is a further hour each way and the guided entry runs on fixed timings, so it does not fit alongside a full Rabat day.
Is there a local guide in Rabat?
Your driver gives the context and the sites are well signposted. A licensed Rabat guide for half a day is about €25 and we book one on request — worth it at the Chellah in particular.
How much walking is there?
Around 4–5 km, mostly flat, with one cobbled climb into the Kasbah and some steps at the Chellah. It is noticeably easier going than Fez or Volubilis.
Is it a good day with children?
Yes — the storks at the Chellah, the Kasbah cats and the beach work well, and the motorway driving is smooth. Car seats on request at no charge.
What time do we leave and get back?
Pickup is at 07:30 at your riad or hotel in Fez, and you are back at the same door after roughly eleven hours. We can start earlier if you have a flight or a dinner to make.
Is the price per person?
Yes — €85 per person, including the private air-conditioned vehicle, the driver and the entrance fees listed below. Couples and families of four travel in the same car at the same per-person rate.
How do we book and pay?
Message us the date and the number of travellers on WhatsApp; we confirm in writing the same day. Payment is in cash to your driver on the morning of departure — no deposit, no card.
What if the weather turns?
The day runs in light rain; only snow on the passes or a closed road forces a change, and then you choose between a different route at the same price or a full refund.
