Atlas Highlands Adventure: Fez, Ifrane & the Middle Atlas
About this experience
An hour south of Fez the landscape changes completely. The plain gives way to cedar forest, the air drops ten degrees, and you arrive in Ifrane — a town of pitched red roofs and clipped hedges built by the French in the 1930s as a hill station, and still the oddest, cleanest, most un-Moroccan-looking place in the country.
The day runs through the Middle Atlas at a comfortable pace: the Cèdre Gouraud forest where Barbary macaques come to the roadside, the lakes at Dayet Aoua and Dayet Ifrah, a Berber village where the lunch is grilled trout from the mountain streams, and the Zerhoun viewpoints on the way home. It is the right trip for a day out of the city, for families, and for anyone who wants to see that Morocco includes snow.
You travel privately with a driver who stops wherever the view justifies it, so the itinerary below is a frame rather than a timetable.

Good to know
Are the monkeys safe to approach?
They are wild and habituated, which is a particular combination: fine to stand near and photograph, not fine to feed or touch. Keep bags closed and food out of sight, and your driver will position you sensibly. Peanuts sold at the roadside are bad for them and make them grabby.
How cold does it get up there?
Ifrane sits at 1,665 m and runs ten degrees below Fez year-round. Bring a fleece even in August; from December to March there can be snow, and the town is genuinely a ski resort.
Is it a lot of driving?
About four hours of road spread across a nine-hour day, in short stretches between stops — the longest single leg is just over an hour. The roads are paved and in good condition throughout.
Is it good for children?
It is our most family-friendly day trip. The monkeys, the lakes and the snow in winter do the work, and the car means you set the pace. Car seats on request at no charge.
Is there a guide as well as a driver?
Your driver speaks English or French and gives the context as you go. This is a nature and scenery day rather than a monument day, so a separate licensed guide is not included — we can add one if you want the history in depth.
Can we swim or walk properly?
The lakes are not for swimming, but there are easy forest walks of 20–40 minutes at the cedars and at Dayet Ifrah. Tell us if you want more walking and the driver will build the day around two longer trails.
What time do we leave and get back?
Pickup is at 09:00 at your riad or hotel in Fez, and you are back at the same door after roughly nine hours. We can start earlier if you have a flight or a dinner to make.
Is the price per person?
Yes — €70 per person, including the private air-conditioned vehicle, the driver and the entrance fees listed below. Couples and families of four travel in the same car at the same per-person rate.
How do we book and pay?
Message us the date and the number of travellers on WhatsApp; we confirm in writing the same day. Payment is in cash to your driver on the morning of departure — no deposit, no card.
What if the weather turns?
The day runs in light rain; only snow on the passes or a closed road forces a change, and then you choose between a different route at the same price or a full refund.
