Roman & Imperial Gems: Volubilis, Moulay Idriss & Meknes
About this experience
Within an hour of Fez sit the three layers of Moroccan history that everyone skips. Volubilis is the best-preserved Roman city in North Africa and a UNESCO site — the Capitol, the basilica, the triumphal arch of Caracalla and, unusually, floor mosaics still in situ under the open sky, where Orpheus and Hercules are exactly where they were laid in the second century.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, ten minutes away, is where the man who founded Morocco is buried; it is the country’s holiest town, closed to non-Muslim overnight guests until 2005, and still a place where the stacked white houses and the green-tiled zaouia look much as they always did. Meknes closes the day: Moulay Ismail’s imperial capital, with the Bab Mansour gate, the Heri es-Souani granaries and the enormous Agdal basin that watered them.
It is the strongest history day out of Fez, it is comfortably paced, and with a private car you can take the mosaics slowly rather than at coach speed.

Good to know
Is a guide at Volubilis worth paying for?
Yes, honestly. The site is large and unlabelled, and a licensed archaeological guide for about €12–15 is the difference between walking past the House of Orpheus and understanding it. We book one on request; your driver can also walk you round at a simpler level.
Can we go inside the shrine at Moulay Idriss?
The mausoleum itself is open to Muslims only. Non-Muslim visitors walk the town freely, see the zaouia from outside and climb to the terrace viewpoint — which is where the photograph is anyway.
How hot and exposed is Volubilis?
Very — there is almost no shade and the site is on an open hillside. From June to September we go first thing, before 10:00, and you want a hat, water and sunscreen. In winter bring a layer; the wind off the Zerhoun is sharp.
How much walking does the day involve?
Around 2 km on uneven ancient paving at Volubilis, a short steep stretch in Moulay Idriss, and flat walking in Meknes. The Volubilis paving is the hard part for anyone unsteady; tell us and we will take the easier lower circuit.
Can we swap Moulay Idriss for more time in Meknes, or vice versa?
Yes. It is your car and your day — many guests cut Moulay Idriss to twenty minutes and spend the extra hour in the Meknes Medina, or the reverse. Just tell the driver in the morning.
Is this better than the Fez Medina tour if we only have one day?
Different, not better. If you have one day in Fez, do Fez. This is the best second day, and the only easy way to see Roman Morocco.
What time do we leave and get back?
Pickup is at 08:30 at your riad or hotel in Fez, and you are back at the same door after roughly nine hours. We can start earlier if you have a flight or a dinner to make.
Is the price per person?
Yes — €60 per person, including the private air-conditioned vehicle, the driver and the entrance fees listed below. Couples and families of four travel in the same car at the same per-person rate.
How do we book and pay?
Message us the date and the number of travellers on WhatsApp; we confirm in writing the same day. Payment is in cash to your driver on the morning of departure — no deposit, no card.
What if the weather turns?
The day runs in light rain; only snow on the passes or a closed road forces a change, and then you choose between a different route at the same price or a full refund.
